Warp Records

Sheffield label founded in 1989 that defined bleep techno and went on to shape IDM.

Founded in Sheffield in 1989 by Steve Beckett, Rob Mitchell and producer Robert Gordon, Warp grew directly out of the FON record shop and studio scene. The first release, Forgemasters' Track With No Name (WAP1), helped define the city's "bleep" sound: stripped-down electronic music driven by heavy bass and machine rhythms.

The 1992 compilation Artificial Intelligence reframed electronic music as something to listen to at home rather than only dance to, and gave a generation the shorthand of IDM. Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and Flying Lotus all built careers here.

Warp still operates as one of the few independents from that era to stay both commercially viable and genuinely restless.
